Cutaneous metastases of internal cancer
نویسنده
چکیده
Background Cutaneous metastases of internal malignant tumors are rare. Though, they sometimes reveal the first manifestation of a malignant tumor. Methods The histopathologic files of two years in two German departments of dermatology (one in Thuringia, one in Saxonia) were investigated for histopathologic evidence of metastatic spread of internal cancer to the skin. Clinical and histologic data were collected. Outcome was evaluated. Results We observed 11 cases of cutaneous spread of internal cancer. Primary tumors were breast, lung, and GIT cancer in 8 cases, and renal carcinoma, gallbladder carcinoma, and thyroid follicular carcinoma in one case each. Preferred sites were the head and neck region and the trunk, but one tumor was seen on the lower leg. The incidence of cutaneous metastasis due to internal cancer was estimated as 4/8,000-10,000 a year. The cutaneous spread is often a sign of poor prognosis since 3 of 11 patients died within the short mean follow-up of 7.5 months. Conclusions Despite the fact that cutaneous metastasis of internal cancer is a rare event, one should be aware of it. It seems to be a sign of poor prognosis. A new and rapidly growing tumor on one of the above mentioned sites is suspicious for a cutanous metastasis. A diagnostic biopsy is recommended in cases where a complete excision is not possible. Zosteriform Skin Metastases from Breast Cancer
Metastatic skin cancer is a rare complication of internal malignancies. Patients who develop cutaneous metastases rarely present with a zosteriform distribution. Herein, we describe a 65-year-old woman with a prior history of breast cancer in whom zosteriform metastases developed along her left T8-9 abdominal dermatomes.
متن کاملA Clinicopathological and Immunohistochemical Correlation in Cutaneous Metastases from Internal Malignancies: A Five-Year Study
Cutaneous metastases from internal malignancies are uncommon and occur in 0.6%-10.4% of all patients with cancer. In most cases, cutaneous metastases develop after the initial diagnosis of the primary internal malignancy and late in the course of the disease. Skin tumors are infrequent in Asian population and cutaneous metastases are quite rare. Cutaneous metastases carry a poor prognosis with ...
متن کاملCutaneous Metastasis from Sacral Chordoma: A Case Report
Chordoma is a malignant, slow growing and locally aggressive tumor. It arises from remnants of the notochord and accounts for 1–4% of all primary bone tumors. They usually arise from anywhere along the spine, from base of the skull to the sacrococcygeal area and usually do not metastasize. Chordomas are slow-growing tumors which are not responsive to conventional chemotherapy or radiation. They...
متن کاملMetastases in cutaneous and subcutaneous scars: an intriguing phenomenon that may herald the presence of a colon cancer
The occurrence of cutaneous metastases from colon cancer to cutaneous scars is being increasingly recognized and reported in the literature. Although the most common scenario involves scars resulting from prior resection of the cancer, rare instances represent distant involvement of scars from unrelated procedures. As well as being of interest as an intriguing biological phenomenon, recognition...
متن کاملMUCI positive cutaneous metastasis with transepidermal elimination from a breast carcinoma
Breast cancer is the most common cause of cutaneous metastases from internal malignancies. Generally, the neoplastic cells are located in the dermis or hypodermis, while a finding of transepidermal elimination on cutaneous metastases is exceptional. In this report we present a patient with perforating cutaneous metastases from breast cancer with mucin 1 expression. Cutaneous, bone, lung, and he...
متن کاملA case of esophageal adenocarcinoma metastasized to the scalp.
Cutaneous metastases from internal malignancies are, occurring in 0.5% to 9% of cases. Lung, breast, and colorectal cancers are common primary tumors that metastasize to the skin; cutaneous metastasis usually occurs on the chest wall and abdomen as asymptomatic nodular patterns. Esophageal cancer is not nearly as common as breast, lung, and colorectal cancers, and esophageal cancer rarely metas...
